Brooklyn families have long understood that a great independent school can be worth the journey. Every school year, there are parents who are willing to commute far and wide for a school with a true campus. At The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine, children have room to run, think, and grow, and you do not need to cross two boroughs to find this top-tier independent school.
The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine, an independent K–8 school, offers a sprawling 11-acre campus in the heart of Manhattan, and it is just a train ride away. Here, children enjoy two playgrounds, two gymnasiums, and an abundance of gardens and green space. It is the only campus school in Manhattan, and as we celebrate our 125th anniversary, we remain devoted to providing children with a childhood experience that feels expansive in the middle of the city.
Cathedral is known for three pillars: academic excellence, character development, and community. Rigor and kindness are held in equal measure here. Students are challenged to think deeply and work hard, and they are guided just as intentionally to become generous, curious, and thoughtful people. Families often describe the school as a home away from home, and it is not unusual for parents and children alike to leave with lifelong friends. It is, quite simply, a different kind of Manhattan childhood.
We know that commuting with young children requires real consideration, and we have worked to make it easier. Cathedral is conveniently located near the A, B, C, D, and 1 train lines, putting us within reach of many Brooklyn and Downtown Manhattan neighborhoods. For families who prefer to share the ride, our partnership with GoKid, a carpooling app, makes it simple to organize group transportation to and from school. Parents can connect with neighbors, split the driving, and turn the morning commute into a chance to get to know one another. For those who already work in or near our neighborhood, the school day and the workday can fit together naturally.
Cathedral welcomes families of all genders and all faiths, and our community is made up of families who value excellence without pretense: ambitious for their children, grounded in who they are, and eager to be part of something larger than themselves. If that sounds like your family, we would love to welcome you to campus for a tour.
